Long Hair, Don't Care

Arthur Midianga

This series seeks to explore the relationship between hair and identity. Hair is a construct reflecting ourselves, our history, culture, and personality. It can also reflect my innermost feelings of self-consciousness and vanity. Hair can also symbolize physical strength and virility; the virtues of a person are often said to be in their hair and nails.

There are deep sociological roots tied to hair. It can be indicative of a certain religious or political belief system. Like genetic code, it’s complicated and touches our very core. It can produce controversy and throughout history there have been restrictive hair practices imposed by institutions.

These pieces seek to spark a conversation around culture, identity, and perception — while celebrating freedom of expression.
